Say it with flowers!

This annual competition is a blooming lovely idea! First of all, a whole school competition gets everyone talking, working out how they are going to contribute, participate, do the best they can. The playing field becomes even when it is an area that is not usually competed in and there is a sense that everyone has a chance if winning matters to them. Equally there is a moment to appreciate what we often take for granted, the creation, beauty, colour, smell, touch and variety of flowers and then what we can do with them. Young designers are required to be resourceful, working out what they need, how that translates into shape and number, language and expression, making links with what they know, the medieval talk; they were seen making connections with their history, creating jousting arenas, shields, gaols, cemeteries, headdresses, jesters, enhancing their displays with lego, knights and herbs to keep away bad spirits as they were used back then. The designs were so different that the flower festival also proved to be a celebration of independence, individual choice making and personal style, certainly a 21st breakout from  flower gender stereotyping of days gone by. Well done to this year’s winner (to be announced on  Speech Day), but in truth everyone got to share in this competition’s winning formula.
