Maths and History Day

Children at St Faith’s participated in a History and Maths Day on Thursday.

This year’s focus was local history and children read a variety of sources to find out about the history of Ash.  Children from Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 visited St Nicholas church where they received an informative talk about the church archives from Church Warden Mrs Taylor. They then returned to school where they analysed census records to find out who lived in Ash 100 hundred years ago.

At lunchtime, the History Club ran activities which included a quiz and various history- related board games. In the afternoon, Reception and Year 1 participated in an archaeological dig and found some medieval treasure buried in sand. A huge thank you to Mrs Taylor for giving up her time to give such an engaging talk about local history.

In addition we were  really lucky to have Explore Learning come to school to run two Maths workshops.  Children from Year 2 travelled with Columbus and consolidated their knowledge of clockwise and anti-clockwise turns through ¼, ½ and ¾.  Year 5 ran an Italian restaurant using fractions, decimals and percentages to work out the exact quantities of the different ingredients.   All the children had a really fun time and lots of learning took place-Brilliant!
