Meet the HEADMASTER

Lawrence Groves

Lawrence Groves
Headmaster

Lawrence joined St Faith’s at Ash as Headmaster in 2013 from Alderley Edge School for Girls in Cheshire, where he was Headmaster of the Junior School. Prior to taking up this role, he was Headmaster of Forest School, and of its sister school, Forest Park, for eight years. Both schools prepare children for entry to the Cheshire Grammar School system at 11+. Through his wide ranging experiences as a prep school head he is keen to ensure that all children have a challenging and extensive broad based curriculum to provide variety of experience and help prepare them for senior school. He also believes that children will have a good work ethic if they are happy and safe.

Lawrence also qualified as an ISI boarding, compliance and quality inspector in 2012 and has had a good deal of experience in visiting other schools for inspection. He believes that this is an important aspect of his own continuous professional development. Lawrence is also Deputy Chairman for ISA London South where he meets and networks with other likeminded head teachers on a regular basis.

Lawrence graduated from Exeter University with a Bachelor of Education and later gained a Masters Degree in Business Studies from Nottingham University. Lawrence is an accomplished sportsman, having achieved county colours in rugby, badminton and cross country. He had many happy years as a PE teacher and had a reputation during his time in New Zealand for being one of the most competitive Englishmen to visit. He always had aspirations to play rugby for the All Blacks and cricket for The West Indies but as a keen tennis player is now happy to settle down and play tennis for Canterbury Tennis Club where he is currently chairman.
